An Efficient Implementation of High-Speed JPEG2000 Encoder/Decoder: ALGORITHMS, SPECIFICATIONS, DESIGN SPACE EXPLORATION

This book presents a complete and up-to-date description of an efficient FPGA implementation of high-speed JPEG2000 using formal design methodologies namely SpecC and A3, in a systematic and clear manner. JPEG2000 proposes a large set of advanced features for today's internet and multimedia applications. At the heart of JPEG2000 are two complex DSP algorithms: Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Embedded Block Coding with Optmized Truncation (EBCOT). Both algorithms are complex, compute intensive and very difficult to optimize in software implementation for real-time imaging and multimedia applications. A hardware implementation brings a solution to this complexity for real-time applications. This book proposes flexible and efficient architectures for DWT, matching arithmetic coder (MQ coder) and EBCOT units of the JPEG2000 system. The implemented parallel structure increases throughput off the Tier-1 (EBCOT and MQC) and DWT by factors of 301 and 164 cycles respectively. Execution results from software only and FPGA implemented JPEG2000 is compared and analyzed.

JPEG 2000 is a wavelet-based image compression standard and coding system. It was created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee in the year 2000 with the intention of superseding their original discrete cosine transform-based JPEG standard. The standardized filename extension is .jp2 for ISO/IEC 15444-1 conforming files and .jpx for the extended part-2 specifications, published as ISO/IEC 15444-2. The registered MIME types are defined in RFC 3745. For ISO/IEC 15444-1 it is image/jp2. While there is a modest increase in compression performance of JPEG 2000 compared to JPEG, the main advantage offered by JPEG 2000 is the significant flexibility of the codestream. The codestream obtained after compression of an image with JPEG 2000 is scalable in nature, meaning that it can be decoded in a number of ways; for instance, by truncating the codestream at any point, one may obtain a representation of the image at a lower resolution, or signal-to-noise ratio. By ordering the codestream in various ways, applications can achieve significant performance increases.

Scalable 3D Visualization: Exploiting JPEG2000-Based Information Hiding

The principal objective of this work is to unify disparate 3D information and then realize scalable visualization in a client/server environment that is heterogeneous in terms of network, computing and memory resources. For scalability we are exploiting the multiresolution nature of the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) from the state of the art JPEG2000 codec. The data unification is being carried out through DWT domain blind data hiding that may either be fully or adaptively synchronous. There is no need to introduce some new format as the final JPEG2000 format is conserved during the process. In the first phase of this work the thrust was on the perceptual transparency and that is why least significant bit (LSB) embedding was employed. The second phase concerns robustness and that is a why spread spectrum (SS) strategy is utilized in embedding, without ignoring the imperceptibility as the embedding is removable. In the third and final phase we take a broader aspect of the problem when we try to render the underlying tile components of a heterogeneous tessellation, seamlessly. This seamless joining of tiles is ensured through special DWT domain smoothing functions.

JPEG2000: Objective and Subjective Quality Measures for Lossily Compressed Medical Images

Due to the constrained bandwidth and storage capacity, medical images must be compressed before transmission and storage most of the time. However, the compression will reduce the image fidelity, especially when the image is compressed at low bit rate, which cannot be tolerated in medical field. In this book, the compression performance of the newer JPEG2000 and the conventional JPEG is compared. Image quality are measured both objectively and subjectively. Generally, there are two kind of compression ? lossless and lossy. Here, the controversial lossy compression is used although lossless compression has always been preferred in telemedicine. The results presented in this book for the lossy compression have been quite promising. Four types of medical images are used in this study ? X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and computed tomography (CT). Overall, the study shows convincing results where by up to a certain degree without significant loss in image quality, lossy compression is acceptable from the medical perspective.
