Since the mid 1990s, data hiding has been proposed as an enabling technology for securing multimedia communication, and is now used in various applications including broadcast monitoring, movie fingerprinting, steganography, video indexing and retrieval, and image authentication. Data hiding and cryptographic techniques are often combined to complement each other, thus triggering the development of a new research field of multimedia security. Besides, two related disciplines, steganalysis and data forensics, are increasingly attracting researchers and becoming another new research field of multimedia security. This journal, LNCS Transactions on Data Hiding and Multimedia Security, aims to be a forum for all researchers in these emerging fields, publishing both original and archival research results. This issue contains a special section on forensic image analysis for crime prevention including two papers. The additional four papers deal with collusion-resistant fingerprinting systems;

Advanced Statistical Steganalysis (Information Security and Cryptography)

Authors: Rainer B?hme
Publisher: Springer
Publication date: 2010-08-29
ISBN: 3642143121
Pages: 285
Price: $99.00

Steganography is the art and science of hiding information in inconspicuous cover data so that even the existence of a secret message is kept confidential, and steganalysis is the task of detecting secret messages in covers. This research monograph focuses on the role of cover signals, the distinguishing feature that requires us to treat steganography and steganalysis differently from other secrecy techniques. The main theoretical contribution of the book is a proposal to structure approaches to provably secure steganography according to their implied assumptions on the limits of the adversary and on the nature of covers. A further contribution is the emphasis on dealing with heterogeneity in cover distributions, crucial for security analyses. The author's work complements earlier approaches based on information, complexity, probability and signal processing theory, and he presents numerous practical implications. The scientific advances are supported by a survey of the classical steganography literature; a new proposal for a unified terminology and notation that is maintained throughout the book; a critical discussion of the results achieved and their limitations; and an assessment of the possibility of transferring elements of this research's empirical perspective to other domains in information security. The book is suitable for researchers working in cryptography and information security, practitioners in the corporate and national security domains, and graduate students specializing in multimedia security and data hiding.

Association Rule Hiding for Data Mining (Advances in Database Systems)

Authors: Aris Gkoulalas-Divanis, Vassilios S. Verykios
Publisher: Springer
Publication date: 2010-05-28
ISBN: 1441965688
Pages: 138
Price: $99.00

Privacy and security risks arising from the application of different data mining techniques to large institutional data repositories have been solely investigated by a new research domain, the so-called privacy preserving data mining. Association rule hiding is a new technique on data mining, which studies the problem of hiding sensitive association rules from within the data. Association Rule Hiding for Data Mining addresses the optimization problem of “hiding” sensitive association rules which due to its combinatorial nature admits a number of heuristic solutions that will be proposed and presented in this book. Exact solutions of increased time complexity that have been proposed recently are also presented as well as a number of computationally efficient (parallel) approaches that alleviate time complexity problems, along with a discussion regarding unsolved problems and future directions. Specific examples are provided throughout this book to help the reader study, assimilate and appreciate the important aspects of this challenging problem. Association Rule Hiding for Data Mining is designed for researchers, professors and advanced-level students in computer science studying privacy preserving data mining, association rule mining, and data mining. This book is also suitable for practitioners working in this industry.

Inaudible Secrets: Improvements to Audio Data Hiding

Authors: Sameer Mitra
Publisher: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing
Publication date: 2010-05-04
ISBN: 3838357701
Pages: 124
Price: $78.00

Growth of broadband communication networks and multimedia data have made it possible for consumers from all over the world to create, exchange, and edit digital data. This has led to concerns with copyright protection and maintaining privacy, giving rise to a new area in security research - Steganography. Until recently, steganographic techniques received much less attention from the research community and the industry than cryptography. Research in steganography has, in the past few years, grown exponentially. A large number of steganographic systems have been proposed, and there are a number of interesting research directions. One of these directions is in the field of audio data hiding. In this book, we look at, and measure key requirements for successful data hiding, and propose improvements to two audio data hiding techniques, namely LSB embedding and echo hiding. The measurement of these key requirements should help shed some light on enhancements to data hiding and would be especially useful to professionals in communications, computer security, or anyone else interested in data hiding.
